Maths - geometry

We have been learning about shapes and position words. Position words tell us where something is or where it is going. 

We use words like: On the cushion, on the mat, In front, behind, the back of the class, around, under, beside, between, middle, on top, in, through, out, off. 
We have also learned about turns and can make full and half turns. Quarter turns were new for us and can be tricky.

Task: Pick a picture of the blocks in a pattern (dont show your buddy). Using our maths words describe how to make the pattern. Remember to give accurate clear instructions.

Success Criteria:

I can: put the shapes in the right place, the place my buddy tells me to.

It was hard when: doing 1/4 and 1/2 turns outside was a bit hard because sometimes we didn't know what side to turn.

I really liked: doing maths in the playground and going up things was fun.

You have worked hard to learn and use our maths position words. Playing Simon Says and learning in the playground gave us all time to practise going under, over, up and down and to start using 1/2 and 1/4 turns. Turns can be very tricky when we don't know what way to go! I think you can use your maths position words but it can be tricky to use your words when it is easier to point to show your buddy where to put the shape. Keep on practising and it will get easier and easier.


We have been learning all about whakawhanaungatanga and what it means. We think it is all about getting along better, including everybody and being in a team.

When we are showing Whakawhanaungatanga we will :

Hear:  kind words, encouraging words like "ka pai", "good job”, “can I help?"

Think about: about other people, listen and share.

Task: Listen to your buddy and learn some things about them. Work together to create a poster sharing what you have learned about each other. Remember to practise using encouraging words, to share ideas and to notice how you your buddy might be feeling.

I show whakawhanaungatanga when: I use kind words on the field when I am playing soccer.

It was hard when: when I am I my house because sometimes I have to do stuff I don't like.

I really liked: playing soccer and being kind and handing the ball onto people I didn't know when I noticed they wanted a turn.

Luca, you use kind words in and out of the classroom. You notice when people are feeling sad or left out and you try to include them or make them feel better. It can be tricky to do the right thing when have to do stuff we don't like. Whakawhanaungatanga is all about being part of a team so helping at home is showing whakawhanaungatanga too.

What I want to be when I am older

When I am an adult I want to be an army man. My favourite thing is sliding down the pole and I like racing scooters with my friends.

You love to play outside and race -scooters and when you are running. I have enjoyed getting to know you this year and am looking forward to learning with you throughout the rest of the year.
